Over the Christmas break I got a window of time to head into the hills to complete a little mission I had set myself some time ago.
I remember walking past a mountain shelter on Foel-grach which is to the North of Carnedd Llewelyn along time ago and decided to have an over-night stay.
I started from Near the A55 at Aber Falls and walked in via the ridge including the summit of Drum using the huge track and then onto Foel-fras. The weather was windy and very cold, what a shock for January at an elevation of 900 meters I hear you all say. I had a quick bite and moved on. Garnedd uchaf and then my overnight accommodation.
I arrived at 4.00PM had some soup and got sorted for the long night. The hut is in very good condition and clean which was a relief as it was going dark and I did not want to have to walk back out if it had been damaged.
I had my tea, made a phone call home as the reception was good, Sophie was able to find the hut on Google earth and look at the same view I was looking at. All this technology, and I used a needle in oil with a bit of plastic to locate the hut amazing!
It blew a storm all night and was ffffffreeeeezing I slept, sort of in all my clothing. I got up at 7.30AM as I was awake anyway and had been for what seemed a lot of the night, I must get a warmer sleeping bag anybody selling one please let me know.
A quick look outside and a fresh covering of snow was discovered. Breakfast and brew and out by 8.30AM
I followed the path Between Yr Aryg and Drosgi to Aber fallswhich was in full flow. I headed back to the car which was parked near the A55 arriving at 11.30AM.
I then headed home. I can recommend a wander on your own with a night in the hills included. A time for reflection as we go into a new year. I hope you have a wonderful 2015 and have made resolutions you can keep, my resolution is to make sure I source and buy a warmer sleeping bag.
