Helping the Bury Jubilee Outdoor Pursuits Centre

Hi - does anyone feel able to respond to the appeal below?

Dave Dickson and I have been involved for a long time but I have now left the area and Dave is probably reaching his last fifty years of useful service (sorry to be so blunt, Dave).

Putting Something Back

If you are from near Bury (Lancashire) and love the outdoors, want to promote opportunities for young people to enjoy the Lakes at minimal cost, have enjoyed using the Bury…

High Mountain trip Next Year

I am keen to get to the Himalayas or perhaps the Andes next year. I'd prefer to go with trusted cronies - so if you might be keen on the same thing please let me know, otherwise I'll book on an Exodus trip (I had to explain to Caroline this is not a one way journey to Switzerland!) in October as an individual. Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon 2016

Great to be out with Tony Hewitson this weekend in weather that was cold wet and windy (Sat) and not much better (Sun). Good navigation and steady pace got us halfway up the field. Up for next year with (hopefully) a strong MoB presence.

Tough on the Streets - cushy in the pub

Derek's Street Orienteering idea turned out to be an absolute cracker!

6 brave competitors took to Rammy's notorious roadways. All of them returned (5 on time). Undisputed champion was Nigel (590 points) closely followed by Elliot (500) with a great performance from veteran Dave Dixon (340) who still had the energy to pursue a spurious argument about a control being in someone's garden (come on Dave it was night time!). There were commendable performances by Barry and…

Bothy Adventure

There were just three of us, Andy, Dave and myself. Work gave up the fight on Friday and we were away in mid afternoon; heading for the western end of loch Arkaig at the southern end of Knoydart; a remote spot. We sheltered from the rain in the Moffat Chippy as we have done many times before pressing on to begin the walk-in. Our wild life drive revealed a pine martin, lots of deer and a dancing fox. An hour and a half's walk  in the wind, rain and darkness brought us to an empty bothy. It's…

Staying Solvent

The club's financial system is very primitive. We collect subs, pay more than half of what we collect to the BMC, act as a bank for various (self financing) trips and occasionally buy sandwiches, pay YHA subscriptions or buy some of the bits and pieces we cannot borrow.

Analysts will recognise immediately that:

  • we get all our income during the first few weeks of the year - so we have to make the money last
  • when an event isn't self financing that…

Following discussion at recent club meetings we have agreed to adopt the following policy concerning the involvement of young people (less than eighteen years of age) in the club’s activities.

The Mountaineering Club of Bury wishes to promote the involvement of all parts of the community in adventurous outdoor activities. We want to ensure that, through the club, people are able to participate in these activities safely and within the policies and guidance of the British…

Mike and Caroline en France

It’s a simple formula; drive to Dover, catch the ferry, sleep somewhere cheap and enjoy the Alps in glorious sunshine. But it rained, heavily and our remote village near Le Desert on the GR54 offered bread twice per week…and little…

A Rite of passage

It was the Friday night of our February winter meet . We were the first to arrive at the Alex McIntyre hut near North Ballachulish and had ventured out in search of somewhere to eat . As we doubled back from a wrong turn in search of the Loch  Leven Hotel  John B took a call from Andy A suggesting the forecast for the following day favoured doing the  Aonach Eogach ridge. The conversation continued and the next thing I knew we were committed !

The following day we rose at…

Man Versus Horsepower

Man verses Horse

Awoke 6.30 and peered out of the window expecting the worst but it wasn't that bad so by 7am l was up and breakfasting but still unsure whether to join the boys. Having Ridden up past Tottington to Holcombe for 9am there was no sign of anyone so a quick check of the phone…
