Grooved Arete Tryfan 30.11.13 -stiff introduction to multi-pitch mountaineering

Ogwen Valley up to Heather Terrace then 7 pitch route (Grooved Arete) carrying sacs etc. Onto S Summit of Tyrfan, summit ridge to main summit and descent via Llyn Bochlywd to Ogwen. (an edit to longer planned descent due to darkness / rapid cloud drop at 4pm).Challenging itinerary for Fiona and Cath as inexperienced in mountaineering of this nature. Also lateish start (10am) so only 6 hrs light. Ensured team fully equipped (headtorches, FA, group shelter, nav kit). Route was excellent and invloved most multipitch techniques. We hit the South summit just as dark and mist hit. Fairly serious and difficult night nav’ over scrambling terrain (pathless at times, all on bearings). Used most tricks in my ML book! Change in slope, aiming off, boxed Bochlywd buttress etc. ML skills put into full use in full night / zero vis’. Exited cloud base near road and down safe before 7pm. Memorable.
