Minutes for AGM 12th May 2010 added on behalf of Derek.

MOB MEETING MINUTES 12.05.2010

Greetings to you all

I hope you are all getting out and about, and making the most of our fine weather. As the new club secretary may I take this opportunity to introduce myself to those of you who may not already know me. My name is Pete Whetham and I have been a member of The MOB now for a couple of years. So I hope I can rely on your support in my tenure as club secretary over the next two years; in other words keep those reports coming. Anyway down to business.

AGM

Rick Riding was made up to Chairman

Mike Chambers was voted in as treasurer

Pete Whetham was voted in as secretary

Membership Fees

It was voted to increase the club membership fees from £15.00 to £20.00. This is due to the following:

The website which until now has been free, will have an annual fee of $200 (£130), along with the BMC insurance, creates the following breakdown of the £20.00 fees:

BMC Insurance £12.00

Website Fees £3.00

Club Fees £5.00

Cheap at half the price!

Furthermore there is a Halifax bank account which currently has £1300 in it. This money will be moved over to the MOB current account.

Summer Break

It was decided that during the months of July/August that the MOB meetings be cut from fortnightly to monthly meetings. This is to take account of members being away on holiday. Therefore we will continue with fortnightly meetings until 23.06.10, then the next meetings will be on 21.07.10 & 18.08.10, with fortnightly meetings being resumed on 01.09.10. However during the weeks that we are not having meetings it is proposed that there will be events taking place; so keep an eye on the website so you don’t miss out.

Crag Cleaning Evening

There will be a crag clean up on the evening of 19.05.10. A quarry has not yet been chosen so once again keep an eye on the website.

Reg & Val’s

I would like to thank Reg & Val for their warm hospitality over the Bank Holiday Weekend. It was the first time for a few of us but definitely not the last, a brilliant time was had by all. See you in August.

Reports

Please see following reports:

The Mob climbing night at Cadshaw went down well despite the threatening weather.

Dom had come over to do some lead climb coaching, taking Brian and Jordon under his wing. Dom set an ab rope up and jumared up besides them as the where leading and giving one to one advice on where and when to put runners in.

The rest experienced lads teamed up with less experienced and polished off all of the better routes on offer. Of note was Pete Whetham’s accidental HS lead thinking it was a V Diff. Many thanks to Dom for giving up his time yet again for the club.

Monday 3rd May(bank hol) I did a walk in N Wales. Started at car park near
Bwlch y Ddeufan. Walked over Foel Lwyd and Tal y Fan, a couple of hills S of
the coast between Conway and Anglesey. Then over to Dolgarrog Reservoir, and
back to start. Dry all day and mainly sunny, but with a cold wind on high
ground. There was fresh snow visible on the tops of the Carneddau. Some rough
pathless terrain, but easier going than it might have been as the ground was
drier than normal.

Sunday 9th May. Started at Edale. Went up Mam Tor. Along to Hollins Cross;
down to Castleton. E by field paths to Navio Roman Fort; N, via Hope station,
then up to summit of Win Hill. Back to Castleton, then back to Mam Tor summit
by different route to the earlier descent. Along Rushup Edge, then down into
Edale valley via Chapel Gate. Weather dry and clear. Bright in the morning
then cloudy in afternoon. Cool, with abrisk wind on tops. Free parking,
because Pay & Display machines had been stolen from Edale car park. Stoped
for a latte + blueberry muffin at tearoom in Castleton.

Derek

On the Tuesday the forecast for the weekend was not looking to hot, and after last August’s wet weekend I was not looking forward to another dousing. Thankfully the weather played ball and we got the tents up in lovely sunshine.

By Friday night the field was full with the usual suspects and a nice sprinkling of first timers. Saturday Louise (the experienced climber) Will Shaw and Jordon broke camp at 6am and headed off into the mountains to Idwal Slabs to get an early start before the crowds. This was to be Will and Jordon’s first big multi climb and they where eager to cut there teeth.

Keith and I headed off in to Llanberis to meet up with the Pennine lad’s paragliding.

As with the mountains the weather can be unpredictable and we ended up having a top to bottom in hailstone and rain. A quick retreat to Penmanmar opposite Llandudno saw better conditions and a chance to dry out the kit. We ended up having a pleasant 2 hours plus soaring out over the Colwyn bay in lovely sunshine whilst the mountains behind in Snowdon where cloaked in cloud. Late Saturday afternoon saw the only rain of the weekend which passed just in time for tea and the evening camp fire.

Sunday I showed off the climbing sites around Gogarth on Holyhead, none of the others had climbed in that area before and were keen to see what was on offer.

Not wanting to put them off or me for that mater we had a pleasant afternoons climbing on Holyhead Mountain with Lou, Will and Jordon climbing together and Barry and myself teaming up. We climbed routes to VS. For those of you who have not climbed there it is a great place for low to mid grade climbs with more than its fair share of good weather. Back a camp everyone was busy with barbeques and settling down by the fire for the evening entertainment. The children had been busy building a stage to put on a little show, with Erin and Neave singing a few songs. I was lovely seeing the kids playing together yet another generation coming through.

Monday Lou, Will and Jordon the keen ones went walking on Conway Mountain whilst the rest of us spent the morning relaxing and packing the tents away in thankfully glorious weather a great end to a great weekend.

As always thanks to Reg and Val for having us, and making everyone feel so welcome.

Sunday 9th of May Rick Colin and my self went down to Milstone in the Peak district.

Apart from a few the routes start at Server with some classic mid grade routes and a lot of hard routes. The day was always going to be cold as it was a north wind with little sunshine to take the edge of it. Rick kicked off with the VS Embankment Route 2, which climbs twin cracks a quite a stiff grade (At least I thought so). Colin wisely decided to site it out and save his energy’s for his lead, Close Shave a nice S 4a down the far right had side. As we where just finishing off the sun decided to make an appearance which spared me on to lead Mayday my first HVS of the season. Whilst we where down that end it would have been rude not to have done Eartha, a lovely HS which Rick made short work of. Next off was the classic Great Slab which had some bold slab climbing on it (which concentrated the mind) , a steep off width and steep exit crack to finish.

By now we where all a bit jaded, but Rick just had enough energy to finish off on the Mall one of Millstones classic VS’s. All in all not a bad day considering how cold it had been.

Mark Davies is organising a mountain biking weekend at The Newton Stewart Hostel in The Galloway area of Scotland, more details to follow.

Derek raised the possibility of arranging a wild camp at sometime over the summer, more details to follow.

Finally Derek raised the importance of wearing a helmet when climbing. He was saying that the harsh conditions this winter have left a lot of loose stuff on routes. Let’s face it you only need to take a hit from a decent lump of rock and it will ruin far more than your weekend. So stay safe, enjoy, and get those reports in.

Next meeting at 8.00pm on 26th May, Rick will be showing a DVD.

Many thanks

Pete
