First leads

Technically my first ever lead was on eney at Wilton 3 a VDiff, but It was a route I had top roped many a time and knew well. It was picked mainly because the beginners rack held between Will Shaw and me, (1 set of wires and 10 quick draws) meant the choices where limited. Becasue I knew the route well it was a straightforward climb, but still a little nerve racking when I was on it. When Dereck text me on Sat night suggesting a trip over to Stanage. I was in, it would get me out of a family… Continue

The Circus has come to town

It is always difficult to motivate yourself on the Sunday of a weekend away if you have had a long and hard day on the Saturday. So with this in mind it was 10.30 am when Rick, Colin, Mark Rothwell, New Mark, Young Will and myself old Mark got out of the cars in Glencoe to head towards Dorsal Arete in Stob Corrie Lochan.

Needless to say we could not park in the nearest car park due to our late start. We did however recieve some vital information and advice from a minibus driver. I… Continue

The Boys from the North West head for the North East

After a late arrival at the Grey Corries Lodge 12.00 midnight if I remember correctly, it was an early call, on Saturday morning 4.15a.m and Rick and myself were up and about Derek and Will were woken and the long day started.

Our taxi driver Mr Eastwood drove us all to the North Face car park he went back to bed dreaming of soaring around the hills. The familiar slog up towards the CIC hut started. Now I think that I am reasonably fit but it always puzzles me when I hear Derek… Continue

Return to Dow Crag Jan 2010

The plan was to go to Dow Crag in the Lakes on Saturday with Rick, Keith and Barney.

Studying the weather forcast and Road conditions we weren’t sure whether we would be able to get over to Coniston, but it turned out ok. Last time we had ventured up to Dow crag back in November it had been pissing it down and Mike and I had had a hard, wet time on Giants crawl. Today was totally different as we passed by a frozen Goats water with Dow Crag bathed in Sun shine, you could have been in the… Continue

The Great Escape - Jacobs Ladder V - Black ladders

The day started well with a prompt start at 5am, a trouble free drive down with great company ( Colin, Mark Davies and Derek) and a walk into the crag ( Black ladders) on firm snow. Having been piped to our chosen route on the last visit, Derek and I set a good pace into the crag determined not to be overtaken. As the ground got steeper the snow got deeper and we were soon swimming up through what felt like polystyrene beads. It was hard work and we attracted a party of four following our… Continue

Blackladders and Idwall Christmas 2009

Blackladders and Idwall 2009

After our first taste of winter Rick and I where very keen to make the most of this unusually good winter period, because as you know it’s been a long time coming.

With the Christmas celebrations over, my mind was focused on making the most of it, but where should we go? In the end with less snow to contend with we plugged for the Welsh mountains.

Monday 4am the alarm rung time to get sorted, Scrape the ice off the car and meet up… Continue

Avalanch

What a winter this could end up being, Scotland has had a hell of a plastering of snow and even the Lakes is full to the brim with the white stuff.

While my thoughts are in winter mode I reflected on past trips and remembered a day out with Dave Owen in 2004. It brought a stark reminder of how fragile our winter play ground can be, you hear it every year about climbers getting caught out in Avalances.

See my passed… Continue

Weather was -1 degrees in the Valley. Low cloud but dry.

Approach - from Cwm Eigiau 1 - 1.5 hrs

Derek, Will., Mark Davies and Rick

Up and away by 6.30am, it was always going to be a biggish day, but events conspired to make it even longer, with our early start rubbed out by a patch of ice.

The day didn't start well with Marks car sliding backwards down a very iced up single track road and ending up in a ditch. About 1 hour later and… Continue

Saunders Mountain Marathon July 4th and 5th

I am doing the event after a bit of a lay off. As ever Mr Kenyon (Mr Motivator) suggested I perhaps inform you all in case you were considering doing one of these events.

There is a history of the club entering these kind of events in large numbers in the past but this seems to have stopped in recent years. Anyway whats it all about, simple two days of hill navigation with an over night camp I am hoping the weather will be a little more gentle than when the other events are on so it could… Continue

The Tour Of Mont Blanc by Bicycle

For those of you who watch the Tour De France year on year, cycling in the Alps conjures up thoughts of pain etched faces and “heroes born”. Since a youngster I’ve watched these men tear the legs off each other in some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Alpe D’Huez, the Tourmalet and Mt Ventoux are amongst the most famous of these stages.

This summer I decided to have a go at some of these “big hills” and together with my Dad decided upon the 400km Tour of Mont Blanc. The… Continue
