Targeting universities, colleges & scout/youth groups was suggested. Some doubted effectiveness of this, because of big age gap between these groups & current membership

Targeting men's mental health/wellbeing groups was also suggested. This led to the question of how we attract new female club members.

Secretary reported committee plans to compose new club rules/constitution (Previous document lost long ago)

Agreed that next month's meeting will be the AGM

In response to query re club equipment, it was confirmed that it's with Jordan

Attending: John Brandon; Ian Brewster; Derek Kenyon; Mike Slater

Main purpose of the meeting was to instigate a process of putting in place club rules, procedures and a constitution. A written document covering these issues is known to have been in existence in the 1980's, but has long ago been lost.

Main purpose of the meeting was to instigate a process of putting in place club rules, procedures and a constitution. A written document covering these issues is known to have been in existence in the 1980's, but has long ago been lost.

Current committee, to carry through this process, and to be in post at least until next AGM: ~ Mike Slater - Chairman ~John Brandon - Treasurer ~Ian Brewster - Secretary ~Derek Kenyon - Membership Secretary ~Mike McGrath - New Member Induction Sec. MS to speak with MM about this

It was agreed that the club needs to have a constitution, in particular to include a disclaimer for liability arising from accidents whilst partaking in club activities, and a procedure for inducting new members into the club. The constitution of the Achille Ratti Climbing Club provides a good basis JB to draft constitution

AGM is now due. Next monthly meeting, Weds 7th June, felt to be too soon. Better to wait till July, giving current committee more chance to work through new constitution/rules AGM Weds 5th July

Proposed ongoing frequency of committee meetings is 6 monthly. To be held on separate dates to the monthly club meetings. Short term, until new rules/constitution are in place, maybe more frequent meetings will be needed.

Quorum for committee meetings - 3

No quorum proposed for the AGM, on the basis that members are informed in good time beforehand(via WhatsApp group) of the AGM date and issues to be voted on, so that they can attend and vote if they wish.

Liability issue was discussed. BMC insurance, which all paid up members have, provides third party cover only. We should decide whether current members are made sign a form exempting the club from liability for any injuries they sustain during club activities Discuss & decide at next committee meeting

New member induction process was discussed. View from the meeting is that new members should be made to sign a liability disclaimer from the start. Probationary period of up to max.3 months is proposed, at end of which they pay fees(maybe partial if part way through the year) to become a full member.

The question of under 18 prospective members was raised. The view was that the membership age should be minimum 18, and that unaccompanied under 18's shouldn't attend club activities

Definatley my toughest ride for a long time, this was one of our first mountain bike rides over 30 years ago on rented bikes curtasy or Derek Holts D Tours. Back then the there was no such thing as suspension and the brakes were cantileaver type. The only lasting memory l have is how recked my wrists were with the vibrations and squezing the brakes. Leading up to the weekend the weather wasn't looking to promising and l was expecting at least some rain and cloud on the summits. As it turned out the weather was OK with cloud free tops giving us some great views in every direction from our highest point of the day on High Street what seemed like a straight two hour climb from Askham. I must admit I was struggling three quarters way through and was ready for a welcome shandy and rest. Fortunately the last section of the day l knew from our last ride in the area and what the last climb of the day entailed that said l was glad to top out. The reward was a fantastic fast down hill stretch back in to Askham .
That's boys, great day out even though there was nearly a mutiny.

A Classic ride but one that l probably won't repeat (-:

It was the Friday night of our February winter meet . We were the first to arrive at the Alex McIntyre hut near North Ballachulish and had ventured out in search of somewhere to eat . As we doubled back from a wrong turn in search of the Loch Leven Hotel John B took a call from Andy A suggesting the forecast for the following day favoured doing the Aonach Eogach ridge. The conversation continued and the next thing I knew we were committed !
The following day we rose at seven and following a quick breakfast were ferried by Andy F to the start point near Jimmy Saville's old 'cottage'.
The walk began with a fairly brutal 1500 ft ascent and a scramble over crags followed by a series of snow fields and our first Summit of the day , Meall Dearg, where we paused for photos.
From then on we were on the Aonach Eogach ridge, the most exposed ridge walk in Great Britain and conditions wise it was shaping up to be a perfect winter's day.
The first major obstacle was a grade 2 descent requiring rope work and following a short delay Dave Owen belayed four of us down the first pitch. At the second pitch we had an extended stay on a fairly exposed ledge as we waited for the parties in front to descend. Once safely down we continued along the undulating ridge line which alternated between broad highway and ribbon like path towards a section known as the Pinnacles.
As the scrambling intensified I presumed we'd reached the Pinnacles until Dave announced we had in fact reached the 'crazy pinnacles' .As I was to discover , this section wasn't named without good reason. Without being tied on I felt very exposed at times but once safely over there was almost a sense of euphoria knowing one of the most difficult sections was behind us. From that point we felt free to enjoy the surrounding panorama which myself and John B acknowledged with a celebratory high five. As we reached the final summit, Sgor nam Fiannaidh , we were treated to stunning views of Loch Linnhe and the Ballachulish Bridge before beginning the long descent to Glencoe village. The initial gradient demanded our full attention but as it slackened we felt able to relax and one by one,we each practiced sliding and braking with the ice axe until the snow had all but disappeared. Our final descent brought us out on the tarmac lane leading to the famous Clachaig Inn where we enjoyed a well earned pint of Scotland's finest.

To myself and John B , the newest club members in the party , the day felt like it had been a rite of passage.
Man Versus Horsepowertag:mountaineeringclubofbury.ning.com,2018-01-24:2535987:BlogPost:615452018-01-24T17:16:20.000ZDerek Kenyonhttp://mountaineeringclubofbury.ning.com/profile/DerekKenyon

Man verses Horse
Saturday night a post came through via Whatsapp about a Mob MTB ride on following morning buthe forecast was for a winter front to push through turning to rain later did nothing not the most inspiring. Awoke 6.30 and peered out of the window expecting the worst but it wasn't that bad so by 7am l was up and breakfasting but still unsure whether to join the boys. Having Ridden up past Tottington to Holcombe for 9am there was no sign of anyone so a quick check of the phone flagged up a change to the meeting point. Eventually meet up with everyone and we set off up over Holcombe via More Bottom road with Mike Magee and Mr Waring on their electrics and Mike Slater and myself on ower trads. As we started to gain hight the snow started to fall and we soon entered the winter zone but thankfully it wasn't to icy. The plan was to ride over to Helmshore and take refugee in the cafe for a brew and some grub. Traversing Holcombe was great fun and the descending down from Robinhoods well proved to be pretty tricky and we were glad to arrive safely at the cafe to the bewilderment of the other customers and staff. On days like these egg bacon butties washed down with a hot brew taste all the sweeter and looking out of the window we were in no rush to go anywhere. Eventually we couldn't put it off any longer as the snow was by now coming down hard and we knew that it would be a bit of a slog home.
On the way back John insisted that we had a go on his electric so Mike and l took a turn in sampling the future of MTB riding and l must admit it was a bit hirey at first but good fun. By now we had dropped back down in to the wet zone and l was starting to feel the cold and with the on set of hot aches l was ready for home. Coming back via lrwell Vail, Nuttall Park and Summerseat both the electric boys came off, probably due in part due to to much power in the slippy conditions. Saying our goodbyes at Summerseat l set of on the climb out and hopefully generat some heat before the final dowehill home. Rolling in at 12.30 l'd had my fill, it had been a rough but enjoyable ride and l was pleased I'd made the effort. Thanks for the message boys, every ride counts.

All l need now is a hot shower.

The day and date Friday 19th January 2018.
Destination Greg's Hut on the side of Cross Fell.
The team Mark Davies, Ian Brewster, Mike Slater, Jon Waring, John (Johan) Brandon and Dave Owen.

Myself, Ian and Dave boarded the Black Stallion and headed North. Jon, Johan ( Only called this because Jon thought it would reduce any confusion in general conversation) and Mike headed for the nearest Mini-market to buy whatever they bought and then headed North.

Snow fell as we cruised up the M6 towards Penrith, Mike told us when he and the other 2 arrived in Penrith and we were all munching on our chippy supper that they had passed a car facing them in the outside lane of the motorway facing directly toward them. It was only afterwards when I gave their experience some thought and had seen how all 3 of them performed over the next few hours that I thought perhaps the offending car, was facing the right way and that it was Mike and the boys who were going in the wrong direction.

Lets move on and put the whole incident behind us, just like Mike and the boys did and move on, after all we are a Mountaineering Club not a road traffic reporting service. From Penrith we all headed toward the bottom of Cross Fell on the East side and parked at Kirkland which has a small car park near the start of the track which passes by the North side of Cross Fell and onto Greg's Hut.

It was 8.40 PM when we all headed out of the car park toward our over night accommodation. We were in high spirits, after all it was only 3 miles and 1500ft of climbing, shouldn't take that long. Some of the boys had coal onboard, I was told that I would not to be allowed near the fire as I carried no combustable material except for my stove. Which I said we could have all gathered around.

The weather was coldish but not that bad, the sky was clear and star studded a great start to the adventure. We started the steady climb on a good track, we soon reached the snow-line but no big deal as it was only 3 miles to the hut. The higher we got the deeper the snow became. Ian, Dave and I took turns to break the trail. I felt in great form and was really enjoying being out on the hill. Just to clarify the last sentence when I say "being out" I am still heterosexual and used the term in an attempt to be as inclusive as possible.

Higher, colder, deeper the snow, stronger the wind, poorer the visibility, but all considered things were going well, and moral was still highish. As I have mentioned before we were not unduly bothered as the hut was only 3 miles away and we had covered half the distance. We were all keeping a close eye on the direction of travel as mistakes would have had serious repercussions on such a wild night, but we were closing in on the hut.

To cut along story short we got to the hut after a few minor navigational re-adjustments. The statistics speak for themselves. 3 miles covered in 3 hours, simple maths 1mile per hour I was amazed at our pace. It just goes to show how the weather, conditions under foot and the need for careful and accurate navigation can drastically change best laid plans. 11.40PM saw Dave Owen rapidly lighting the the stove and generating some very warm heat. "And rest" as Derek K would say.

We made ourselves at home in the weather proof and well maintained hut which is named after a man called Greg who fell to his death in the Alps, there is a webpage about the hut if you go on the worldwide internet web. Ian and I head back out into the wild weather to find some water. We discovered a buried stream further up the path. I cannot recommend enough staggering about in a blizzard at midnight trying to locate a water source buried under 2 foot of snow, and then freezing your hands buy filling a large plastic bucket. The last thing I want to do is bang on about it so I will not. Ian and I got back to the hut to find the remainder of our very close and well organised team gathered around a furnace like fire drinking whiskey slightly diluted with hot chocolate and coffee. Ian and I were so glad to see they were all ok.

We sat around for an hour or so putting the world to right and discussing Brexit and all the huge complex issues it has created for us all, I did not understand as I am a Weetabix man myself, and so to bed.

A lazy start to the Saturday morning, porridge and coffee with some more coffee and off into the whiteness. The plan was simple back up towards Cross Fell and then over the top and toward the col to the south, turn west and back to the cars. We had a sit down on the summit of Cross Fell in stunning clear weather. It was great and always is to have time to catch up with everybody and find out what is happening in their lives. Dave is heading North, Cumbria is calling, Ian has now started a big new adventure, good luck with that, Johan was able to make a brew on top of a mountain using all his skills to produce a luke warm chocolate type drink, and Jon and Mike both found a phone signal.

Back to the cars for 3.30PM less than 24 hours after leaving, 17 hours in fact. What a great mini adventure, remember boys and girls it is not always about the walk, weather or mountain it is nearly always about who you are with.

Thanks boys for a great 17 hours,
Mark Davies
MOB Dec meetingtag:mountaineeringclubofbury.ning.com,2017-12-17:2535987:BlogPost:610242017-12-17T12:46:31.000ZJohn brandonhttp://mountaineeringclubofbury.ning.com/profile/Johnbrandon

Putting Something Back

If you are from near Bury (Lancashire) and love the outdoors, want to promote opportunities for young people to enjoy the Lakes at minimal cost, have enjoyed using the Bury Jubilee Outdoor Pursuits Centre in Glenridding or wish to offer your skills to running a charitable trust that keeps the centre going now is the time to step forward.

Our management committee meets every 8 weeks or so to review bookings, ensure the centre is running properly and plan its future use. Most of the current members are very long serving and some have cherished the building since it opened in the late 1970’s. We have reached the stage where new and, probably, younger committee members are needed to maintain the energy and enthusiasm that has made the centre such a success over many years.

We are looking for individuals with a wide range of skills and experience – including being in touch with young people, knowing the hills, understanding building maintenance, managing budgets and sometimes being able to get up to the Lakes to meet official bodies.

The current committee members would all tell you they enjoy the work. Some of the team spend a few days annually making minor repairs and improvements to the centre. They usually find time for a walk (these days – I gather runs may have been popular in the past!) and have a good time just staying together in the centre.

You may have heard the Jubilee Centre was looking for management committee members before. We were, but this time we really do need to recruit some new members if we are to maintain this excellent facility for the young and old from Bury and those from further afield.

Quiet time at present due to holiday season, but hopefully more events to go on the web as we move into latter part of the year
Karl, Andy and myself drove to Horton in Ribblesdale on Sat morning, arriving around 10.30 ish. This is where the 3 peaks walks start from. A visit to the cafe with the famous "clocking in" clock was a must and a brew / bacon buttie followed. A leisurely start up a Tarmac farm rd took us onto the tops where good views were had. We went up onto the pennine bridleway / Dales way which is good firm hardpack. The route then took us down a rocky technical path which was tricky on the mtb and very…

A visit to the cafe with the famous "clocking in" clock was a must and a brew / bacon buttie followed. A leisurely start up a Tarmac farm rd took us onto the tops where good views were had. We went up onto the pennine bridleway / Dales way which is good firm hardpack. The route then took us down a rocky technical path which was tricky on the mtb and very tricky on the cross bike that Andy was on with no suspension at all! We survived this and had a good downhill into Hawes and the campsite which was great value and very well run.
A trip into Hawes with a few beers and a curry followed.
The Sunday dawned with clear skys and another trip into Hawes for a full English.
We set off back around 10.00 ish and went up and up ! The Roman rd ( Cam high rd ) took us in a straight line , as they do, right up onto the tops followed by a flying descent down oughtershaw rd down into Langstrothdale. A right turn at Beckermonds took us back through the forests and over onto the pennine way / Ribblesdale way down into Horton.
All in all a great 2 day bike packing trip with very varied terrain and enough of a challenge without it being a epic !
If anyone wants the route give me a call. I would thoroughly recommend it. ( don't go to the curry house though as we were all a bit rough on the Sun ! )MOB minutes July 2016tag:mountaineeringclubofbury.ning.com,2016-07-26:2535987:BlogPost:548482016-07-26T17:08:51.000ZJohn brandonhttp://mountaineeringclubofbury.ning.com/profile/Johnbrandon

Where are current meets on the calendar up to re bookings ? Matt ( treasurer) to bring up to date lists of who's going and who's paid up to next meeting.

MOB Facebook page was discussed. Also use of the "meetup" web communication system that other groups are using. Do we want to set up a meetup page for the MOB ?

Discussions were had on membership. What are we doing re new members ? Do we have any thoughts on marketing the club a bit to try to attract new members ?Summertag:mountaineeringclubofbury.ning.com,2012-07-27:2535987:BlogPost:334792012-07-27T18:16:10.000Zdave dicksonhttp://mountaineeringclubofbury.ning.com/profile/davedickson
